Sunflower State FC looks to get their first win at Soccer Nation KC this year, following a 2-8 home opening loss to the Omaha Kings, coached by Fernando Gatica.
Sunflower State kept it close until the final quarter of play as they pressed to pull a goal back and were subsequently punished. SSFC found chances hard to come by most of the game against a motivated Kings team. The Kings played well after one of their own, Renato Silva, went down in the first half with a bad injury. Their goals came from Bobby Jaffery, Leonides Mejia, Ali Sodal, and Cody Thayer. SSFC goals were scored by Girma Kassa and Ruairi Cotter.
SSFC is now 1-2 in MASL III and look to, once again, get a win against the Wings II.
Coach Nick McDonald who was not present at the home opener due to playing with KC Comets in Dallas for their MASL regular season opener, said of the game, “We needed to work better defensively. We need to be better as a unit at pressing. I also want them to be quicker with their decision making when we do win the ball, because our last game, we gave them [Omaha] too much time to react.”
McDonald will once again be away with the Comets this weekend, as they travel to Lakeland Florida to take on the Florida Tropics on Friday, January 8th at 6:05 CST and Sunday, January 9th at 2:05CST.
Sunflower State will be coached Saturday by Kenny Mayer and Nic Jaimes.
The Wings II, another new addition to MASL III, are playing as a developmental team to the first team playing in MASL II. However, because the Wings 1st team is off this upcoming weekend, they may have some of their players get some minutes when they make the trip to Kansas City, KS. It just depends on what Coach Roger Downing decides. The Wings II played their first game December 19, 2020 against the Omaha Kings FC where they lost 3-5 and a day later lost their second MASL III game to Sunflower State FC 1-10
